Is it because your trying to be “faithful” to an experience you had? You do it too, whether you realize it or not. Why do we endlessly obsess over the colors in our photographs? To some degree, we all do it. It is here that you will fully realize the importance of technical mastery for its own sake. You’re going to do it the other way around, You’re going to learn some new technical skills and translate them into your own resonant language. Now your going to do it the way the masters do it. You’ve been learning how to discover your artistic identity using some if the technical skills you already have. Let’s begin to take this one step further. If you’ve been through The Imagined Image, you know through firsthand experience that all of this is true. Your language is found by working through the answering of the four questions above. Their instrument might be a piano, guitar, or trumpet. The musician’s language is a personal one. It does only one thing: it is a vehicle for masterful articulation in the resonant language of that musician’s own artistic vision. ![]() It’s necessary, but it’s the beginning rather than the end. The musician knows that technical skills is a tool. You use them to make music with your instrument. You apply them in the same way a musician applies them. This is where your technical skills enter into the picture. you carry within you the most important resources necessary to go through the entire process successfully. You’ve already realized that this comes up short, leaving you with a feeling that you’ve made work that is far less than what you intended.īut there is some good news. Most of us have been taught to go from some version of the first question directly to a diluted version of the fourth question. Unfortunately, while it may be simple it’s not easy. You only need to ask these four questions and then follow through on the answers. Being the best version of the artist that you are can be done anywhere. By now, you understand that your best work isn’t “out there.” You know that you don’t need to travel to some far away, exotic location to find it. ![]()
